Eremo di S. M. Maddalena Monterosso al Mare

The Hermitage of Saint Mary Magdalene is situated on the hillside above the town of Monterosso, from where it enjoys fabulous views out across the enchanting landscape of the Cinque Terre, and the shimmering Ligurian sea.

The earliest existing documentation regarding the site dates back to the mid 13th century, when a community of Benedictine monks depending on the monastery of St. Gerolamo della Cervara in Portofino settled here. This fascinating historic complex is comprised of a single nave church linked to a small monastery by a cloister, this latter featuring a series of rounded arches supported by slender brick columns.

Recent restoration work has transformed the medieval structure in unique historical residence; and the fan-vaulted, monks' cells, in attractive habitable units. The villa of the Hermitage of Saint Mary Magdalene is distributed over three floors. At ground, or cloister, level, there is a sitting room with large open fireplace, two bedrooms, bathroom, small study, and kitchen. From the sunny terrace magnificent views across the surrounding countryside can be admired. The cloister transforms in wonderfully cool, open-air dining room where to eat or simply relax in warm weather.

Stairs lead up to two bedrooms with private bathroom, a comfortable living area and dining room the windows of which overlook gardens scattered with century-old olive trees, and beyond; across the fairytale landscape of the Cinque Terre. Two other double bedrooms, a bathroom with shower, and a storage room are located on the second floor of the building. The villa has a total of 6 bedrooms.

In the gardens of the Hermitage of St Mary Magdalene, a superb swimming pool has been built, set amidst the silvery leaved olive trees, and overlooking a breathtaking view of the sea.
